Bighorn River Fly Fishing 2020

March 9, 2020 by Jeramie Prine

Bighorn River Fly Fishing 2020

Bighorn River Fly Fishing

Bighorn River Fly Fishing

Bighorn River Fly Fishing Report, Thermopolis, Wyoming: Fly fishing has been pretty darn great the past couple of weeks. The Bighorn River is in good shape and the trout have wintered well. We are catching a lot of big trout, but there is a healthy class of 12-14 inch trout as well.

The weather has really heated up this past week, and the snow pack is melting quickly. This melt caused the Bighorn River to blow out this weekend. The snow is just about gone in Thermopolis. The weather is supposed to be nice all week. Sunshine and warmth is very much welcome!

Please respect the Rainbow Trout redds (spawning grounds) as they are busy doing their reproducing. Do not wade or fish the large white patches in the river. We need trout to reproduce to have a healthy river.

According to the Bureau of Reclamation river flows will be around 2000 cfs for March. It is anticipated that the spring flush will be happening around March 28th. This is subject to change should the weather have other ideas. April water flows will be around 3000-3500 cfs. To see most current Wind/Bighorn River water flow click: HERE

Wind River Snowpack fishing guide

Wind River Absaroka Mountain Snowpack

The snowpack in the Wind River and Absaroka Mountains is quite abundant this year. It is reminiscent of 2011; the last big water year that we have experienced. The Bighorn River, Green River, and Wind River along with many waters around the state will be running full this year if snowpack is a predictor of anything. We took a scouting trip into the head of of the Wind River/Bighorn River headwaters region at the Ram’s Horn Guest Ranch. Our cabins are completely buried under huge wind blown drifts. We will continue to monitor the high country and keep you posted on those conditions.

Bighorn River Fishing Report Wyoming River Flows

Bighorn River Fishing Report Wyoming

Bighorn River Fishing Report Wyoming

Bighorn River Fishing Report Wyoming River Flows: The Bighorn River flows are starting to bump up due to the amount of snow in the Wind River and Owl Creek Mountains. Flows have ramped up from 900 to 1525 cfs as of today. Boysen Reservoir is currently 88.8% at capacity. It is expected that the river will soon be up to 2100 cfs. Keep posted to see when the Spring Flush will be happening. It will be this month and more info coming tomorrow. To see most current releases from Boysen Dam: Wind River and Bighorn Rivers click HERE.  The Bighorn River was off color and had quite a bit of moss floating in it yesterday, but the weather, company and fishing were great. The moss and clarity will only get better as the river flows stabilize. Hot flies: annelids, sow bugs, streamers. Keep posted for Green River water flow information coming soon. It is going to be a big water year!

Bighorn River Spawning Rainbows

February 18, 2016 by Jeramie Prine

Bighorn River Brown Trout

Bighorn River Wyoming Fishing Report: Fishing on the Bighorn River is back to “Bighorn Good.” We had a great day with our friend Chad on Sunday. It looks like spring time is in the air with great fishing and more boats on the river. It was nice to see all of the couples floating and fishing together on Valentine’s Day. A family that plays together, stays together! The rainbow trout are starting to spawn and stage on their redds (spawning beds). Dunoir Fishing Adventures asks anglers coming to fish the Bighorn River to please not fish, wade, or walk across the redds found in shallow riffles in the white gravel patches. There are plenty of nice fish to be caught in the deep runs beneath the riffles without disturbing spawning fish. They are the future of keeping the Bighorn the fishery strong and healthy.

Bighorn & Green River Spring Fishing Report

March 28, 2015 by Jeramie Prine

Bighorn March Rainbow trout

Bighorn March Rainbow trout

Bighorn & Green River Spring Fishing Report: the fly fishing on the Bighorn & Green Rivers have been outstanding lately. Rainbow trout are stacked on redds (shallow water with gravel spawning beds). Please avoid the temptation to fish the redds as these are the future of our rivers.  There are plenty of fish in deep runs and riffles to be caught and you will not get the stink eye from local anglers. Fish are keying in on midges, annelids, and baetis patterns. We have trips going out on the Bighorn & Green Rivers this week so keep posted for more reports.

Summer Fly Fishing: Bighorn River Report

June 14, 2014 by Jeramie Prine

bighorn_river_thermopolis_fly_fishing_bruiser_brown_trout_1_20140613_1234836078The Dunoir Fishing Adventures crew has had a very busy week fly fishing on the Bighorn River. The fishing has been good to down right outstanding! Hats off to Tim (see photo) and his mother Pat for a fantastic couple of days. Nick, Spike, and I were guiding yesterday and we did not experience the streamer bite that Jeff put his guests on. Fish were keyed in on baetis, annelids, and sow bugs. River flows are still up, but it looks like the Bighorn River will not see the 4000-5000 cfs that they were predicting. Personally, we like big water! The Wind River in Dubois is still blown out, but the lakes are fishing great. Nothing beats a day or two of still-water fly fishing! To see more photos, visit us at our Facebook site and keep posted for many more reports to come! Gotta LOVE summer!
