Bighorn River Fishing Report: Thermopolis, Wyoming

March 13, 2018 by Jeramie Prine

Bighorn River Fishing Report

Bighorn River Fishing Report: Thermopolis, Wyoming

Bighorn River Fishing Report: Thermopolis, Wyoming: No Spring Flush this year on the Bighorn River according to the Chief of Water Operations. Typically, every March the Bureau of Reclamation will conduct a spring flush to wash out sediment and debris from the river to help with spawning and trout habitat. However, due to the high water we have seen this last year and through the winter there is not a need to have a spring flush. River flows are projected to increase to 2000 CFS in the next few days and will probably reach 3000 CFS by the end of the month. River flows from then on will be highly dependent on what spring will bring with moisture and melt.

Current water flows: Wind River/Bighorn River

Fishing on the Bighorn River has steadily gotten better from the middle of winter. Warmer weather is helping the fishing and bringing quite a few anglers eager to shake the cabin fever to the river.  We ask fishermen to avoid fishing to podded up rainbow trout on their redds (spawning beds) in shallow water. Fish the drop offs and deeper runs and you will catch just as many fish. Hot flies right now include: sow bugs, midges, annelids, leeches

Casting for Recovery: Dubois, Wyoming

Project Healing Waters Long Beach Program

Project Healing Waters Long Beach Program

Bighorn River Fishing: Thermopolis, Wyoming is dropping water flows each day, and the clarity is starting to improve. Fish are definitely starting to feed. We are taking out several fishing trips out on the Bighorn this week, so keep posted for more to come! It will be great to get back to the Bighorn knowing that the fishing should only get better each day! The Wind/Bighorn River is flowing at 5106 cfs with only 4300 cfs coming in. Boysen Reservoir should be out of flood stage tomorrow! To see current water flow data on the Wind River and Bighorn River please click HERE

Dubois, Wyoming Fishing Report: The past few weeks our guides have been busy in the Dubois area fishing the many tributaries. The streams and creeks have been fishing extremely well with dry-dropper setups. We have been honored to work with Casting for Recovery Wyoming and Project Healing Waters Long Beach Program over the past few weeks. It is always a very special treat for us to spend time on the water with some of the most amazing people! Thank you!

The water is dropping quickly in Dubois, and we have all been looking forward to fishing the Wind River. Unfortunately, the Wind River is low enough to fish, but there was a huge landslide that is sloughing in dirt and debris into the river. We are not sure when the river will clear up, but we will keep you posted. To read more about the landslide in the Wind River click HERE

Green River Fontenelle Fishing Report: The Green River below Fontenelle has been fishing well through high water and through the dropping of river flows. Guests have caught some beautiful trout and it is great to see the river fishing so well! High water years and plenty of precipitation have really helped the fishery! As the summer temperatures heat up, we will spend less and less time on the Green River to help protect the fish. The river flows are currently at 4770 cfs. Bighorn River, Green River & Dubois Fishing Reports

Green River Wyoming Fishing

BIGHORN RIVER, GREEN RIVER & DUBOIS FISHING REPORTS:

Bighorn River Fishing Conditions: The Bighorn River is as big as most people have seen it right now and is flowing at 9012 cfs. Hot Springs County is requesting that people steer clear of the river until we get through our peak runoff (happening now). The river was fishing ok at 8000 cfs, but now it is a muddy mess. Current inflow is 17,775 cfs. We will not be booking trips on the Bighorn or below Boysen Dam until conditions improve. We will keep you posted on these conditions as they get better. To see current river conditions, please click this link for detailed information: Boysen Dam Bureau of Reclamation Data

Dubois, Wyoming Fishing Report

Dubois Area Fishing Conditions: The Dubois area is the headwaters for the Wind River and Bighorn River. The Wind River and many of its tributaries are at peak muddy flows right now. If looking to fish the area we have had guides on the mountain lakes. The upper elevations are starting to improve and we have had success fishing these areas. Some of the high mountain creeks are becoming fishable. We have not really had any big hatches come off yet, so we are looking forward to the next several weeks as water conditions improve. We are taking bookings right now for the mountain lakes and high mountain streams right now.

Big Water Green River Fishing

Green River Fishing Conditions: We have been guiding on the Green River several days this week. Fishing has been productive when the weather and the wind are favorable. The Green River is flowing BIG (10,500 cfs) and is a little off color, but the fishing has remained steady despite big river flows. Definitely not a great time to wade fish the Green River, but the drift boat gets you to all the water. We are booking trips on the Green River right now, and conditions will only improve as the peak runoff subsides.
